GIA gemological laboratory provides a simple way to quantify the quality of a diamond by 4 criteria: the 4 C.
« Cut »: the form
There are several forms but the round cut is the most common.
« Color »: the color
There are many shades of white. Thus, to list them we give a letter graduating whiteness of the diamond. It starts at D to finish at M-Z, D being an exceptional white.
« Clarity »: the purity
Using a magnifying glass, we can evaluate the degree of impurity of the diamond: flawless (FL), very very small inclusion (VVS), very small inclusion (VS), small inclusion (SI), inclusion visible to the naked eye (I).
« Carat »: the carat
It represents the weight of the diamond and more or less its size.
